Flowers N The Garden

Planting potatoes in a barrel

Last year and this year we have planted Yukon Gold potatoes in barrels. Last year we used 2 full size 55 gallon drums. White plastic. drilled holes in the bottom and around the bottom edge..put in dirt, buried potatoes and waited……we ended up running out of dirt to keep them hilled over enough…..55 gallons is a lot!

Here is what we did this year, we took those 2 same barrels, and cut the bottoms off

After he cut the bottom off, we then cut them in half… you don’t need to drill any more holes, since the pototes will be planted in the ground..

we wiggled the barrels into the dirt just a bit (after tilling soil)

A few days after they where in place and potatoes planted we looked out there and our son had rolled all the barrels away :) but we got them back home.

The potatoes went into the ground on March 21st. We buy our seed potatoes at Smith’s Market

This picture was taken on 4-11-2010.. Be ready for how fast potatoes grow!

This picture was taken today 4-29-2010. We have already had to bury the plants up once..and will need to again soon

I love creeping phlox! We have a wall in front of our house, and If I had it my way it would cover the whole thing!

But, I guess for now I will have to live with what I have, I do wish it would bloom a bit longer!

I figured I should do a garden update! So I went out the other day taking some pictures, and should of added them then…as they have grown more sense then!

Here are the potatoe plants…we did 4 half barrels..about 3 plants in each…Golden Yukon.

We have sugar snap peas in, as well as snap beans. 8 of each….
There are 9 head lettuce plants…

In the house I have 9 cucumber plants growing, and 3 squash…some of them will be shared with family or friends…

:)  I love my garden

I took this picture today for a group contest. The contest was called “stacked”. I stacked the 5 rocks on top of a mirror and then took the picture outside so the sky reflected.

This was taken at Carey Park 3-15-2010. I love how it turned out.

Any comments?

Tried to take a picture of my daughter’s spelling words tonight. Not sure if I like it or not.

Comments?

Here is a Spider egg sac that is in our backyard. I have been waiting all winter for it to open!

This morning it had some frost on the web.
